Writing under the name Constant Little Ghost (a moniker created by merging the title of a favourite song and a writer's description of a digital watch in a darkened room) Cornwall-based London-born composer Jay McCarthy likes to explore those sounds which create emotional connections with the listener.

Growing up immersed in electronica and making use of synthesis and samples to create music may lead to him being considered an electronic composer/producer, but it is his passion for the spacious and melodic elements of  post-rock, kosmische, ambient, lo-fi, and neo-classical genres which exert the greatest influence over his writing. Harmony and structured dissonance live side-by-side; dynamics shift from sparse reverberant echoes to intense walls of distortion; overdriven bass guitars share space with strict drum machines and metronomic rhythms; acoustic recorded instruments exist within digitally generated soundscapes. Music journalist Paul Clarke wrote:

"[McCarthy] shows a grasp of atmosphere, pacing and scale that would be impressive in old hands like Mogwai, let alone a relatively obscure artist self releasing on Bandcamp".

Unsigned and working solo, “The Yellow Knife” was written, performed, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered solely by Constant Little Ghost at home over the summer of 2024. Taking influence from artists from across the musical spectrum, “The Yellow Knife” does not seek to be part of one particular genre, instead being the product of a palette of sounds, textures and instrumentation derived from a lifetime of loving music. "The Yellow Knife" is not a collection of songs. Instead it unashamedly attempts to revisit the importance of the album as a long form  listening experience.

Following the successful independent launch of on Bandcamp in October 2024, Electronic Sound magazine called Constant Little Ghost "a master of musical storytelling" and included the artist in their 2025  Top 101 Grassroots Musicians. The album has now had a wider release on on Amazon Music, ‎Apple Music, iTunes, Deezer, and Tidal.
